Tropical North Queensland: starring in Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough documentary

Tropical North Queensland's dwarf minke whales star in Sir David Attenborough's Great Barrier Reef documentary series to be released in the United Kingdom on December 30.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland (TTNQ) Chief Executive Officer Alex de Waal said much of the three-part series had been filmed in the Tropical North Queensland region around Cairns.

"Tropical North Queensland is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef with more than 100 ways to experience this World Heritage area," he said.

"As well as swimming with dwarf minke whales, you can dive with giant potato cod, snorkel with turtles, go stand-up paddle boarding over coral gardens around an island or keep your hair dry with a helmet dive.

"The Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough series will be broadcast across the world in the New Year and will encourage the many people who aspire to visit the Great Barrier Reef to do so.

"Sir David himself was one of those people who aspired to see the Great Barrier Reef as a boy and realised his dream in 1957 when he travelled from Cairns north to Raine Island in Tropical North Queensland.

"At the launch of his Great Barrier Reef series earlier this month, Sir David revealed that when he is asked about his favourite place in the world he always says home and then North Queensland."

Sir David said: "North Queensland is a wonderful, wonderful place. It has got everything, it's got mountains, it's got tropical rainforest, it's got the Barrier Reef, it's got wonderful creatures that you can't get anywhere else, it's a great place."

Mr de Waal said this was wonderful praise for Tropical North Queensland, the destination where the rainforest meets the reef with its two World Heritage areas side by side.

"It is an extraordinary benefit for our region to have someone with that level of expertise and experience making that statement as there wouldn't be a corner of this planet that Sir David hasn't been to," he said.
